As ideas change andnew products become popular, the word “Green” has firmly become associated withconcepts such as pollution, sustainability and conservation.

Pollution is thedamage we do to the living environment. It is the contamination of air, water,or soil by substances that are harmful to all living organisms, including humans.

We have created lightpollution and noise pollution, as well as thermal pollution into our waterways.

And many of us create indoor pollutionwhen we use chemicals in our home. New paint, new furniture, new wood and newcarpets all leave harmful fumes as they continue to dry.

Air-conditioners recirculate dust which contains bacteria, virus, dustmite faeces and scales and so much more.

Many schools have avery polluted indoor environment because they use so many harsh chemicals totry and kill any harmful bacteria.

Greenest Clean workshops on the Sunshine Coast

I presented another Greenest Clean workshop recently in our beautiful little corner of Queensland, with 38 very keen people attending.
Everyone wanted to get as much information as possible on the greenest way to clean without chemicals. Some attendees were motivated by health issues and wanted to stop using toxic sprays and harsh cleaning products to clean the house.

And as far as I am concerned, cleaning with vinegar is not cleaning green as you are still using numerous plastic bottles, which have to be manufactured, transported, recycled...

That's the beauty of using microfibre, all you need is a glove and a bit of water. Also a lot less effort as the microfibres do most of the work for you, leaving you with more time for the fun stuff, like playing golf with friends (I'm still not over my hole in one)!

I am planning to deliver more Greenest Clean workshops on how to use microfiber to clean green, so get in touch if you would like me to hold a session at your local Sunshine Coast Library.

Hospital Sterilizers Conference

Ha-Ra recentlyattended the National Sterilizing Research AdvisoryCouncil of Australia Conference on the Gold Coast to speak to Hospital,Theatre and Sterilizing department staff on using microfibre for cleaningprocedures.

In fact, Atherton, who manufacture sterilizers, have beenrecommending the Ha-Ra cleaning system for over 15 years in their manual on themaintenance of sterilizers.

Leon and Idid quite a bit of research on our recent trip to Holland and Germany. We saw severalother brands of microfibre or other environmental cleaning systems. HoweverHa-Ra is still a leader among cleaning systems in Europe due to its quality andcompetitive pricing.

Cleaning without vinegar

A friendasked me recently what motivated me to start using and promoting Ha-Ra allthose years ago. As a former theatre nurse I understood the negative effects ofcleaning agents and wanted my children to grow up in a chemical-free home.

Before the modern-daysprays and aerosols we only used a bucket of water and some laundry soapto wash clothes and floors. No bleaches, no softeners, no washing powder ordisinfectants, just good old fashioned scrubbing using soap, water and oldrags.

Then in the 50’s some of the chemicals used to kill peoplein wars, such as chlorine, found their way into cleaning products. We were then brainwashed about how easy it is to clean: a squirt and thejob is done. The big breakthrough in this market was ‘Swipe’, I remember a door-to-doorsalesman selling my mum on the farm boxes of the stuff. But all these cleaningagents actually build up streaks on surfaces and smears on windows.

So 19 yearsago I discovered the pioneer in microfibre cleaning systems: I startededucating Australians about fibre cleaning and encouraging them to throw outall those poisoned ‘magic’ potions that lurk around the home.

But evennow the public is not convinced that fibres and water alone will do the job. Weran a competition on green cleaning tips, and so many people still believe theyneed vinegar for a ‘green‘ clean. In fact using vinegar or lemon juiceon surfaces such as marble or limestone can actually stain or even pit the stone.

The latest trendis disinfecting everything: actually most cleaning agents kill the bacteria butdo not remove them, whereas microfibre cleaning, using only water, removes thebacteria and leaves behind only a dry, clean surface. And no chemical residue!

Well it’s agrey day here on the Sunshine Coast, so I’m off to bake some naughty chocolatechip cookies. I’ll even share the recipe with you:

140gm Butter
150gmCastor Sugar
130 gm SoftBrown Sugar
1 Egg
250gm PlainFlour
6gm BicarbSoda (1/2 tsp)
150gmChocolate Chips
100gm PecanNuts (or any of your favourites)

Creambutter and sugars. Add egg & mix through.

Sieve flour & bicarb soda onto mix, add chocolate chips and nuts, mix thelot by hand.

Roll abouta tablespoon & flatten slightly on a baking tray, bake about 12-14 minutesat 180C.

Now bribe someone to make you a cupof your favourite brew and put your feet up, you deserve it.

Mould and Asthma

"We recently had a customer contact us to clean their home as their daughter had been diagnosed as an Asthmatic due to the mould build up in the home.

The only reason we have mould is that the surfaces are not clean, and dust and moisture combined form this bacteria.

Using the Ha-Ra fibre cleaning system we removed the dirt and dried the surfaces thoroughly hence the mould can not grow. There was no food eg: dust and moisture, left for the mould to grow on.

With such high humidity it is inevitable that you will end up with mould growing in areas that you do not think about cleaning on a regular basis. Door frames and hinges are a common example as well as glass windows, runners and tracks, and of course high ceilings where moisture and dust can build up and fuel large amounts of mould. Check your carpets and floor mats. They will smell of mould if not cleaned and the dust removed - this is a high mould risk area.

While I was doing the quote for the customer I pulled her daughter's bed back and lifted the mattress to find mould under and around the frame of the bed. The total home was cleaned using the Ha-Ra micro fibre system from top to toe, removing all the mould.

I might add we used 25 buckets of water!

The fibres of the Green Glove and Green Floor Pad literally absorbed the sand and dirt into the fabric to be washed away with only water.

Getting excited about cleaning.

"For some time now, I have been procrastinating about ridding my household of at least some of the smelly, toxic cleaning chemicals we seem to think are necessary. I have always been concerned about the fact that I clean surfaces that my daughter comes into contact with constantly, with poisons. While we may be killing the germs, what are we doing to our family?

I purchased the vinegar and bi-carbonate soda and there it sat because I didn't really know where to start - it all seemed too hard when I could pick up the familiar chemicals and do my cleaning.

About six weeks ago I was introduced to Ha-Ra and without wanting to sound corny, it has change my life - certainly the way I clean. I have never done so much cleaning because it is so easy to just pick up the relevant fibre cloth and with just water I am able to clean and wipe at the same time - no messy rinsing.

I was sceptical at first because we are creatures of habit but the proof is in the pudding. It is difficult to explain to people how easily these products work - I always say you need to experience the products then you will understand. I started with the Ultra and Natura and I am gradually adding to my cleaning tools as I find out more about the uses of the cloths. I am amazed at how the cloths can lift grease without the use of chemicals.

Natura glove - change your life!

I have to say that Ha-Ra is no good for my image - I seem to be cleaning all the time because it is so simple and the result is brilliant. My floors no longer have that sticky feel when you walk barefoot on the ceramic tiles and my bathroom gleams with very little effort. I have actually cleaned areas I couldn't be bothered with before - like fly screens.

I am not saying that Ha-Ra is the only way I can clean my house - or that the fibre cloths are the only cloths that will clean. Now for something a little different...

Simple Duck Bake

This simple duck dish has been prepared by Noel many times during his duck shooting days. Any sort of meat or fish with a gamey flavour can be used

Ingredients

500 grams duck (or other meat)

20 grams dried mushrooms - soaked for two hours in warm water

1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

300 grams rice

10 grams wild rice

80 grams cheese of your choice, grated

250ml sour cream

Equipment

Heavy based oven proof frying pan, wooden spoon, rice cooker or stainless steel dish

Cook the rice in twice the amount of water and add the wild rice for the last two minutes of cooking.

Fry the duck in the frying pan until cooked, cut in to cubes, and mix with the mushrooms and parsley. Season to taste.

Grease the frying pan and put a layer of rice (half), all of the duck mix and then a second layer of rice.

Sprinkle the cheese on top and spread the sour cream over the lot.

Bake in the oven at 180 deg c for about 45 minutes, until crispy on top.

Coquilles Saint Jacques au Saffron

This is a gorgeously simple French recipe for 4 people.

Ingredients

Approx 200g scallops per person roe on, off the shell

75 grams butter

1 x medium shallot, finely chopped

1/4 tsp saffron

1 tsp cognac/brandy

1 tsp vermouth

2 x tomatoes, peeled, deseeded and cubed

100g mushrooms, sliced

400g cream

salt and pepper to taste

Equipment

pot, large frying pan, wooden spoon, measuring cup, scales

To cook the rice:

Put 1 cup of rice in to a large pot with about a tablespoon of oil or butter.

Add twice the amount of water to rice (2 cups) and boil til ready.

For the scallops:

Melt 75g butter in a pan and add shallots. Glaze the shallots. Add scallops with roe still on, saffron, salt and pepper. Poach for 2 mins.

Add cognac and vermouth, tomatoes, mushrooms and cream.

Cook for a further 8 mins.

Serve on rice.

The Green Book that I mentioned a few weeks ago finally arrived from the US in to my mail box and what a great little read. Printed on 100% recycled paper, this book has all those little gems to turn you from 'I don't know where to start' to 'these are some of the things I am doing to help save our beautiful planet'. Read on. (Yes, it is American but that doesn't mean that the effects are any different to right here in our own back yards.)

Computers

Activate the power management function, or sleep mode, on your monitor or CPU box. If just TEM employees did it, they would save nearly $500 in energy costs per year.

Pens

Try to use refillable pens, pencils and markers. Disposable plastic pens are not recyclable, nor are they biodegradable. Throw one away, and it will still be in a landfill fifty thousand years from now.

Messaging

If you can, send a text message or email from a handheld device or cell phone, instead of from a computer, especially quick, one line notes. You'll save yourself time and conserve energy. Compared to sending a text message, emailing and text messaging from a computer uses more than thirty times the electricity per message.

And finally...

Water

Only 3 percent of the water on earth is freshwater, the rest is saltwater. This is important because: fresh drinking water supplies are becoming increasingly scarce. Only 20 percent of the world's population has running water, and more than one billion people do not have any access to clean water.

The magic window system

Like deserts and Arctic wastes, tropical rainforests tend to inspire a feeling of awe in those who visit them. However, unlike these other sparse environments, the majestic forests girdling the Equator represent incredible concentrations of biodiversity, containing more than half of the world’s plant and animal species.

Inside a rainforest, the first impression is one of darkness, a result of shade from the dense tree cover. A complex ecosystem extends from the emergent layer, a top storey that is often home to butterflies, bats and monkeys, down to the forest floor with its fast-decaying plant and animal matter.

Other inhabitants include millions of tribal peoples who have been living close to nature in rainforests for millennia and have devised a way of meeting their needs without destroying their home. The long-term future of many of these indigenous tribes remains under threat from a range of development pressures.

For the Western world, the importance of rainforests is becoming increasingly obvious, with about a quarter of all modern pharmaceuticals derived from rainforest ingredients. A less self-interested motivation is the protection of this rich, diverse web for future generations. In the words of John Seed from the Lismore-based Rainforest Information Centre, “The rainforests are worth preserving because they exist.”

Sadly, more than half of the rainforests have already disappeared, representing a great loss to the world. Regrowth forests do not have the same biodiversity as largely undisturbed forest, so conservation of what remains should remain the top priority.

I firmly believe that awareness is a choice and we all have to make the conscious decision to change the way we do things so that our children and grandchildren get to enjoy the environment the same that we are lucky enough to and did as children.

It doesn't have to be difficult, you don't have to start battling pharmaceutical companies for example but it is time to show you care and it has to start at home.

Brilliant, brilliant polishing cloth!

Snapped! Jo drying off an air conditioning unit with the Brilliant Polishing Cloth after damp dusting the outside of the unit.

A key to successful cleaning is to dry off surfaces once cleaned, thus discouraging bacteria back to the surface. This cloth is perfect for exactly that job.

1. Start utilizing the No Poo Method and stop using conventional shampoo. You’ll eliminate many toxins and chemicals using just baking soda to wash your hair, and vinegar to condition it. It will help take your hair back to its natural condition, and you’ll notice healthier and shinier hair!

2. Learn how to make deodorant. Natural deodorant (like Tom’s of Maine) is around $5 for a stick. I think that’s outrageous. Make your own deodorant using baking soda, cornstarch, and coconut oil. It will work just as well as commercial deodorants, cost you pennies, and save you from putting aluminum into your armpits. It’s a win-win situation!

3. The Oil Cleansing Method is an awesome way to ditch your face cleaner. You use all natural oils to clean your face. It sounds crazy, but it really works! Since I started using the oil cleansing method, I haven’t suffered from breakouts or dry skin. My skin feels nice and smooth and supple.

Well, it was time to sneak out on to a work site and get some photos of the 'Green Team' at work. A builders' clean at Sunshine Beach was the perfect opportunity. With everyone hard at it and dressed in their greens, it made for some great photos although their enthusiasm for being snapped is not quite up there with their enthusiasm for getting the job done.

Bindy, seen here using the green glove on the runners, is always moving and with her years of experience selling and using Ha-Ra is like lightning on the job. She says she doesn't need a gym... the hard work and movement is all done right here!

It is a pretty simple philosophy, it can just take some getting used to in your home. We have had ingrained in us for so long now that we just cannot get our homes clean without chemicals. Here is a facebook page that you can check out for Go Green!.

Taking steps to going green can be easy and inexpensive. Mostly it's about conserving energy and reducing waste.

As a part of this group, you must commit to at least 10 of the following steps:

1. Run full loads in the dishwasher and don’t pre-rinse – it will save up to 20 gallons of water per dish load. (Or turn tap off while scrubbing if handwashing.)
2. Keep the microwave clean to maximize its energy. And microwave instead of using the oven when possible, it’s 3.5 – 4.8 times more energy...

5 Steps to a Healthy Home

If I was to sum up in 5 basic steps how to create a healthy home, this would be it!

Take your shoes off before you enter the building.
Don’t use chemicals to clean your home; use damp microfibre cloths to dust and clean.
Keep at least 2 metres from appliances and other sources of electromagnetic fields.
Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter and motorised head.
Get an appropriate water filter.

Carrot and Walnut Muffins

This is a great, healthy muffin recipe ideal for lunchboxes, from the book Muffin Mania from Anne T Clark, an absolute health guru. With no dairy, refined sugar or white flour it is the perfect alternative to those fatty, cakey muffins available everywhere. It's so easy... and it works! Enjoy.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup carrots, grated

3/4 cup water

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1 1/2 cups wholemeal self raising flour

1/2 cup walnuts, chopped

1 cup raisins, chopped

1/2 cup honey

1/2 tsp nutmeg

1/2 tsp bicarb soda

extra water

EQUIPMENT

microwave bowl or saucepan, medium bowl, sifter, mixing spoon, muffin tray

Put the carrots, raisins, water, cinnamon and nutmeg into a saucepan (or microwave proof bowl). Bring to the boil and simmer for 10 minutes or microwave on high for 2 mins.

Cool. Sift together the flour and bicarb soda. Add this, the walnuts and honey to the carrot mixture. Add extra water (enough to make an easy-to-spoon mixture but not runny) and mix well. Spoon in to well greased muffin pans.

Bake 25 mins at 200 deg c/400 deg f. Makes 12 muffins.

This article features on the Readers Digest website and has ideas that we can all make the most of in our endeavour to become 'greener cleaners'.

A clean home is both a pleasure to live in and essential for healthy living. Maintaining a regular cleaning routine keeps dirt under control and moulds and allergy-producing substances in check. Cleaning little but often is the key – if you catch dust and spills before they turn to grime, you won’t need harsh chemical cleaners.

1 Stop the dirt before it comes inside. Place good-quality dirt-absorbing mats at all entrances to the home. Your carpets will stay cleaner and last longer.

2 Initiate a shoe-free policy in the household to avoid the problem of tracking in oil and dirt from outside. Provide a shoe rack at the door and a chair nearby, to encourage people to oblige.

3 Try to tidy up as you go. If you haven’t the time, clear up small messes as they occur and you won’t have a big job to deal with at the end of the day.

4 Instead of reaching for the strongest chemical cleaner first, look for environmentally responsible cleaning alternatives. Mostly, they will work just as well.

5 Act fast on spills and stains. You’ll not only find your cleaning is more effective, you’ll also need fewer chemicals to do the job.

6 Give cleaners time to work and you’ll find you need less of them. Leave mould and oven cleaners to work overnight, for example.

7 See how little you can get away with. Use less when applying household cleaners, whether they’re commercial brands or more natural alternatives. You may find a wipe with a damp cloth is all you need.

8 Use elbow grease. Brushes, scourers and cloths are the first line of defence against dirt and reduce the need for harsh, fast-acting chemicals.

9 Use recycled materials to clean kitchen and bathroom surfaces. Old cotton T-shirts and towels are perfect. They’re economical and longer-lasting than disposable wipes and paper towels.

10 Work out a minimum cleaning routine to keep your home functioning efficiently. That way, even if you’re extra busy, at least you know you’ve covered the basics each week.

What you don't know can hurt you!

Yet more research on just how chemicals are damaging your health and all those around you....

The solution is as simple as reading the labels on your personal
care products and replacing them with safe ones.

One of the worst and most widespread of these dangerous
ingredients is sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). SLS is absorbed through
the skin and retained in the brain, heart and liver. Studies show that
SLS also affects other areas in the body, such as your child's still
developing eyes. SLS has been shown to retard the proper
development of eye tissues, cause cataracts, slow the healing of
other eye problems and even cause blindness. SLS doesn't even
have to get in the eyes to cause eye damage. It does as much harm
when it is absorbed through the skin.

Many so called "natural" products also have SLS as an ingredient.
They may have a label that says, "100% natural ingredients." Just
because it says natural, doesn't mean it's good to put on your body.
Poison ivy is natural, but I sure don't want that on my skin.

The intended use of SLS is as an ingredient car wash soaps,
engine degreaser and garage floor cleaner.

According to the Material Safety Data Sheet for SLS, exposure can
lead to a burning sensation, coughing, wheezing, laryngitis,
shortness of breath, headache, nausea and vomiting. It also
specifically warns that SLS may be harmful if absorbed through the
skin and that prolonged or repeated exposure should be avoided.
(The federal government requires a Material Safety Data Sheet for
any hazardous chemical.)

Caramelised Oranges with Lemon Yoghurt

Ingredients:

8 large navel oranges

250g caster sugar

150ml hot water

1 cinnamon stick

1 cup pistachios, shelled (175g)

Lemon yoghurt:
625ml Greek yoghurt (2 1/2 cups)
1 lemon, grated zest and juice

Equipment:
zester, juicer, large saucepan, sharp knife, wooden spoon, kettle, large dish

Peel 4 oranges thinly and cut zest in to fine shreds.
Plunge zest in to boiling water, leave for two minutes then drain well and set aside.
Peel all oranges right down to the flesh. Slice oranges horizontally, collecting any juices that run out.
Place oranges in large dish and pour any collected juice over.
combine caster sugar and 1/2 cup cold water in a frying pan.
Stir over a moderate heat until sugar has dissolved then bring to the boil. Boil without stirring, until sugar becomes a dark caramel colour, shaking pan from time to time.

Very carefully pour in hot water, making sure you stand well away from pan as mixture can spit.

Swirl mixture around in pan and then stir briefly. Add reserved orange zest and cinnamon, then simmer gently for 10 minutes or until zest has changed colour to golden brown.

Pour syrup over oranges and set dish aside to cool. top with pistachios and lemon yoghurt.

Lemon yoghurt: Combine yoghurt, zest and juice in a bowl and stir until smooth.

This dessert is best chilled in summer.

Cleaning Chemicals in Breast Milk

I have just been reading the most interesting article...

"Studies show human breast milk is contaminated with more than 100 industrial chemicals. These chemicals come from household products like flame-retardant upholstery, dry cleaned clothing, and even common cleaning agents."

I don't believe it! Well, actually I do believe it. WHAT are we doing?? More importantly, what are we going to do about it?

"Chlorine, ammonia, and petroleum based cleaning products leave fumes and residues in the home that are absorbed by our bodies. These chemicals leave residues and fumes that penetrate our skin, are inhaled indoors and out, or are ingested. Our bodies act as reservoirs for these substances because of the way some chemicals attach themselves to fatty tissues. This can lead to the build up of dangerous concentrations which eventually work their way into mother's milk when the body calls on fat supplies during lactation."

Commit to doing something about the build up of chemicals in your home. Simplify your cleaning system, rid your home and family of harmful products.

Stewed Apple & Coconut Cobbler

Ingredients:

3 red apples, peeled, cored and sliced

1 cup frozen blueberries (or other berries)

1/2 cup castor sugar

2 tbsp lemon juice

1/4 cup water

1 vanilla bean, split and seeds scraped

1 cup SR flour, sifted

1/4 cup castor sugar
100g unsalted butter
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup shredded coconut
1/4 cup rolled oats
1 tsp vanilla essence

Equipment:
medium oven proof pan, wooden spoon, small sharp knife, food processor, scraper

Set oven to 180 deg c.

Place apples, berries, sugar, lemon juice, water and vanilla bean in to a 4 cup capacity oven proof frying pan over medium heat.

Bring to the boil and cook 5 minutes until apples are just firm and liquid syrupy.

Discard vanilla bean and set aside.

Put flour, sugar, butter in food processor till breadcrumb like.

Gradually add milk and vanilla.

Stir in coconut and oats.

Spoon over apple mixture.
Place in oven and bake 25-30 minutes and serve hot.

Prawn Gumbo from the cookbook of Robyn Agnello

Ingredients:

3 tsp salt
1/2 tsp white pepper
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/2 tsp dried thyme
1/2 tsp dried oregano
2 bay leaves
1/3 cup vegetable oil
3 tbsp flour
1 tbsp tomato paste
1 large brown onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, crushed
4 large tomatoes, chopped (I use one large can)
6 cups stock or water
1 cup rice, uncooked
750g green prawns, deveined, tails on

Prep time: 25 mins
Cooking time: 40 mins

Equipment:
large pan, sharp knife, small bowl, wooden spoon

Put first 7 ingredients in to a bowl and mix
Heat oil in large pan over high heat and stir in flour.
Return pan to heat and brown flour without burning
Add tomato paste, tomatoes, onions, seasoning mix and garlic and cook for 2 mins, stirring frequently.
Turn heat down, gradually pour in stock, bring to the boil and keep boiling for 2 mins.
Add rice, reduce to a simmer for 20 mins, stirring occasionally.
Add prawns and cook for another 4-5 mins.
Serve in hot bowls... delicious!! Serves 8.

Cleaning the bathroom should not go hand-in-hand with ‘gassing’ ourselves.

Chicken with creamy mustard sauce

Ingredients:

2-3 chicken breasts, cut in half lengthways
2 Tbl plain flour
2 Tbl lemon pepper seasoning
1 Tbl oil 1 Tbl butter
1 Tbl seeded mustard
300ml cream
salt

Equipment:

Fry pan, plastic bag, cutting board, sharp knife, measuring spoons/cup.

Preparation Time: 5 minutes.
Cooking Time: 12 minutes.

Place flour and lemon pepper in the plastic bag. Add chicken and shake to coat. ~Heat butter and oil in fry pan. ~Add chicken and brown well ~When almost cooked, add the mustard and stir for 1 min. ~Add cream and stir until reduced slightly and changes to light gold.

DO NOT BOIL. Season with salt Serve with vegies or salad This recipe is so easy and really delicious. I often cook it when I have visitors as I always have the ingredients in the pantry, it’s quick and like a restaurant meal!
